MLB: Dodger trade that almost happened and an Indian trade that did

There is a rumor going on that the Dodgers were on the verge of trading James Loney, Russel Martin, and prospects for Heath Bell and Adrian Gonzalez. As a Dodger fan, I refuse to believe this. This trade would have crippled the team. Paul Deposdesta lost his job because he killed the Dodgers pennant chances when he traded Paul LoDuca during the race and left them with a gaping hole that they werent able to fill until Russel Martin came in. The Dodgers do not have a catcher in the minors that can take over (They traded him to Cleveland for Casey Blake). The pennant race is not the time to make a switch at an important position like catcher. (very few teams have been able to pull it off and I believe that says more about the catchers than the gm’s) Back to the issue, the Dodgers don’t need Heath Bell and it would have made no sense.

Update to an old post: the Indians traded Jonathan Meloan for Winston Abreu. Well Winston Abreu has now been designated for assignment. (for lack of a better words, his chances of being an Indian in the future are slim to none now)
Abreu was suspended for 3 games for hitting a Mariner. 6 innings pitches and an era of 10.50 is what you got for a solid prospect.
